Old in Vegas is New Again

The performance tradition in the city of Las Vegas is eclectic and often prone to taking exciting turns. There are thousands who are drawn to the nightly shows, looking to catch a glimpse of their favorite aging rock stars. Or see how good the next superstar impersonator might be. It’s a draw that sometimes determines the vacation plans for those booking a Las Vegas hotel , timing their trip for their idea of a perfect evening.

Perfect evenings are easy to come by in this town. It’s perfectly designed to bring about the maximum potential for fun every day and night of the week. Sometimes, the best nights out are the ones where the big shows are sold out, and a little exploration can reveal new surprises. Onyx Theatre has a mission to present rather interesting new work to different locations in the city, and the performers are taking the best of the old with them into an exciting present.

It’s certainly true in the case of Emily Larsen, whose Sugar Puppy Comedy Cabaret draws on themes from contemporary pop alternative culture. It also makes good use, and reinvention, of the burlesque traditions that were once the mainstay of live performance in Vegas. The past is always prologue, and it’s always cycling back into the present to ask questions about the future.
