The Oklahoma Stretch of Route 66
This longest unbroken section of the original Route 66 travels through Oklahoma. There are lots of attractions along the way that are linked to the famous road. When you stop in Clinton OK, you will want to take a step into the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum . It opened in 1968 and was first all about western trails. Now it leans more towards transportation all together including the famous road. It shows information on how the road was constructed, the hotels and restaurants that were along the way for six decades of driving activity. It has some fascinating stories to hear from the people who studied the subject the most.
Elk City OK also has a Route 66 Museum. The whole city is a small old school town and they have four museums filled with all kinds of history of the state and the famous mother road. You may want to see what is going on in Elk City OK it is a quaint place with lots of history to discover.
Another impressive place to get information on Route 66 is in Chandler OK. The Route 66 Interpretive Center is in a small town between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. It is located inside an old armory building that was built in 1930′s. The old building has a history of its own. It was commissioned by Roosevelt during the depression to get men back to work. It was built for the Oklahoma National Guard. The inside of the building is now full of chrome and neon of the fifties and the exhibits focus on the life that the automobile and Route 66 breathed into America.
