Ice Skating Across Manhattan

During the Christmas holiday, many people think of ice skating around the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center.  Until recently, when I thought of ice skating rinks in New York City, this was the only one which came to mind.  Now, I don’t really dig ice skating, as it kind of wreaks havoc on my weak ankles.  But I recently visited my friend Robert who lives in the city, and ice skating is his thing, so before I was aware of just what was happening, he whisked me from the warm comfort of my luxury Manhattan hotel room, and took me on a tour of all the rinks, in all the boroughs.

Our first stop was in Midtown Manhattan at the rink on the frozen pond in Bryant Park.  For Robert, it was a free skate as he owns his own.  For me it was less than the price of a New York movie ticket, just $12 to rent a pair of skates.  It was great for me, a better option to the rink at Rockefeller as it was less crowded, meaning there were fewer people for me to crash into.  After our skate at Bryant Park we stopped into Celsius, a nice little pub that offer up hot toddies to warm are bones and soothe my frazzled nerves.  During the week we spent time at the Polar Rink, which is located at the American Museum of Natural History.

We took a few turns around the Lasker Rink in Central Park, and spent a day at the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink.  In all, I did have a fun time, exciting and terrifying, but fun none the less.  However next year, I will time my visit for the summer time, when the gardens are in bloom and those blasted rinks are in their original state of bodies of water, lakes and ponds.  Should you be however, one of the lucky ones with balance and skill on a set of skates, a tour through the ice rinks of the city, is a wonderful way to experience the New York vibe, the outdoors, and the various neighborhoods that make this city one of kind.
