A Garden outside of Montecatini Terme

There’s a villa in Italy known as the Villa of a Hundred Windows, with a spectacular 18th Century garden, which unfolds before you on a high hill, just a few miles from Montecatini Terme hotels.   The Villa Garzoni was built in 1633 (the 17th Century), deliberately constructed on an ancient border of the republic of Lucca and the Grand Duchy.  The first architect was Marquis Romano di Allesandro Garzoni, who may have traced out the path for the garden sometime in 1652.  Over time, water plays and statues were added, creating a series of mazes and mirrors, water jets, and lanes where men and women could relax and court each other.

Considered a work of art, the Garzoni Garden crosses the line between Renaissance and Baroque eras.  You’ll find here theaters made from hedges, mythological statues of women and satyrs, grottoes and peacock-filled greenhouses, as well as bamboo forests.  Over the garden’s three hundred and fifty-eight year history, a tradition developed that visits to the garden will be fortunate for lovers.  The idea of this myth is suggested not only by the satyrs and female statues, nor simply by the shaded and secluded spots for privacy, but also a maze, which may be meant to represent the path two people follow together in life.  Be sure to check out the Storico Giardino Garzoni Museum and Art Studio as well.

After a trip to the Garden, a return to Montecatini Terme may be in order.  This ancient town is perhaps the largest and most popular of all of Tuscany’s spa-set.  Whether or not the Garzoni Garden provided you future luck with romance, there, in Montecatini Terme, you may dip into the healing waters of the local spas, or take a day’s excursion into Florence, where you can see some of the most celebrated art of all time, including, of course, Michaelangelo’s David, contained in the Academia Museum.
