Hartford, CT rich in history and insurance

Hartford, the capitol city of Connecticut has a long and rich history dating well before the arrival of the European settlers. Located along the banks of the Connecticut  river just about in the center of the state. In the early 1600′s a trading post was set up in the area called Fort Goede Hoop by the Dutch at the confluence of the Connecticut and Park Rivers. This post was latter abandoned in 1654. The first English settlers arrived in the area around 1635 and began a settlement they called Newtown which was latter renamed Hartford in 1637. The name chosen to honor the English town of Herford the home of Samuel Stone of the English setters there. Hartford has grown over the years and today is known as the Insurance Capitol of the world due to the large number f insurance companies located there.

Today Hartford is not only home to insurance companies. There are several well respected world class universities and colleges located in Hartford. Wadsworth Atheneum, Trinity College, the Hartford Conservatory, the Institute of Living, Capitol Community College, University of CT School of Business, the Hartford Seminary, University of CT School of Law, and Rensselaer at Hartford to name a few.

Today Hartford is a metropolitan city only a few hours drive away from New York City. Stay at a hotels Hartford for business or pleasure. Rich in colonial and revolutionary history Hartford is a must visit for American history buffs. The Aetna Headquarters building is the largest surviving example of colonial architecture in the world it is crowned with a tall Georgian tower inspired by the Old State House in downtown Hartford. Armsmear, Bulkeley Bridge and Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts are all interesting architectural and engineering achievements to be seen. Below the state capitol of the city there is Bushnell Park consisting of rolling lawns, sculpture, fountains and a historic carousel.
