Madras has a fascinating history, and there are tours and many sights that are as informative as they are entertaining. One of the biggest attractions to Madras, of course, is the star-gazing that is possible only in the home of Kollywood. Kollywood, India’s Tamil cinema, is a huge industry, and one whose roots come from old movie houses at the beginning of the 20th century. Before that, there are some precursors to the form and style in some of the folk theatre traditions that are still very important to the cultural make-up of the city. One of the hottest directors in town, and one to surely watch, is Simbudevan.
His first large-scale Kollywood film, Arasam 23am Pulakesi, has caused a good deal of excitement in local and global cinema. He has reinvented the satire and brought it to film, with this historical comedy that some compare to early Mel Brooks. The story is an old one, centering around a set of twins, played masterfully by Vadivelu, one bad and one good, and involves a farce-style switch-up, and plays upon very old themes of good and evil to great comic effect. Simbudevan, whose background is cartooning, has a great sense of the humorous, and this is back in play with his upcoming film, Arai En 305-il Kadavul, about god staying in a hotel room next door to two average guys. The word on the street is that this is another blockbuster for the young filmmaker.
