Greenmarket Square, Cape Town, South Africa
As with wine, some cheeses, and with love, age tends to make many things more…rich. More better. This is true of the one of Cape Town, South Africa’s oldest out door markets, the Greenmarket Square. This market is set on cobblestone, between two streets, Long Market Street and Short Market Street. The people of Cape Town have been coming here for years to buy clothes, sandals and shoes, jewelry and artwork. This place is a buzz, one of the most eccentric and colorful characteristics of a city, that is eccentric and colorful. This is a quaint and hip area wherein one may find the perfect boutique hotel Cape Town has to offer as well as the perfect scarf or piece of jewelry to take home as remembrance.
And while the market place has remained popular over the years with locals, and is gaining in popularity with the tourists, the prices remain reasonable and the vibe remains the same. From fabric to make clothing and blankets and pillows, to objets de curios, to artifacts and artworks, this is the place to go. The market offers up not only these items of Africa, but from just about every other city and country in the world as well.
Barter, barter and more barter…it’s the name of the game in the market. There are many restaurants popping up around the borders of Greenmarket, excellent opportunities to sample the local food, tasty and delicious, while relaxing and people watching during a break in the shopping spree. And one should not be put off if the service in the coffee shops is gruff, just think of grabbing a cup of joe in many of the Manhattan or Brooklyn shops, and get on with the day. It’s a fast paced environment here, and people work hard. Originally, the market was one structure, built in 1696. First a watch house then the City Hall, it has turned into a burgeoning square. And one must simply experience, no way around it…do not leave Cape Town without going to Greenmarket Square.
